Walk the site and open the panel

Electrical estimates start with two things: the work the customer asked for, and the system you are tying into. Walk every area where work will happen, then look at the panel. Note its capacity, available breaker spaces, brand and condition, and how the existing wiring looks. A simple circuit add in a panel with no space left is a different job than the customer described.

Access decides your labor. Fishing wire through a finished two-story house takes far longer than running it in an open basement or during a remodel with walls open. Note ceiling access, attic and crawl space conditions, and whether drywall will need to be opened and patched.

Photograph the panel, the work areas, and anything outdated or damaged. Those photos support your material count and your assumptions later.

Count devices, fixtures, and wire

Electrical material takeoffs are counts plus distance. Count every device and fixture by type, then measure or pace off the wire runs from the panel to each new point, following the path the wire will actually take, not a straight line on the floor plan. Add slack for routing through joists and boxes.

The device count gives you boxes, receptacles, switches, and fixtures. The wire measurement gives you cable by the foot. Breakers, connectors, staples, plates, and consumables round out the list. Small parts are where electrical estimates leak margin, so count them rather than guessing a lump sum.

  • Devices by count: receptacles, switches, dimmers, GFCI and AFCI points
  • Fixtures by count: lights, fans, and dedicated appliance connections
  • Cable or wire by the foot, following the real routing path
  • Boxes, connectors, staples, plates, and fasteners
  • Breakers and any panel work, including a panel upgrade if needed
  • Permit and inspection where the work requires them

Where permits or licensed work are required, check your local requirements and put the fee and the inspection time in the estimate, not in your margin.

Build the line items

Estimate labor per task from your own production history: time to rough-in a device, time to fish a run through finished walls, time to hang a fixture, time to terminate at the panel. A helper on the ladder or feeding wire counts too. Multiply total hours by your loaded crew cost, meaning wages plus the true cost of employment.

Handle what is inside the walls

Old houses hide old wiring. You cannot see junction boxes buried in walls or brittle insulation until you open something up, so write your assumptions into the estimate: the price assumes existing wiring is usable and concealed conditions, once found, are quoted as a change before work continues.

If the scope touches existing work that may not meet current code, note it and check your local requirements. Naming the uncertainty up front is what keeps a fair price from turning into an argument later.

Mistakes that lose money

  • Quoting from the customer's device list without checking panel capacity
  • Measuring wire runs as straight lines instead of real routing paths
  • Skipping the small parts: boxes, connectors, plates, and breakers
  • Pricing labor as if the walls were open when they are finished
  • Forgetting drywall patching or making clear who handles it
  • Absorbing the permit fee and inspection trip instead of billing them

What the customer should see

A finished electrical estimate shows the scope in plain terms: devices and fixtures being added or replaced, any panel work, labor, permits, and the total. State your assumptions about concealed wiring, note exclusions like drywall repair or painting, and give the price a validity window.
